Professional learning → teaching response → improved student learning

Completed evidence chain showing mentor feedback from an early Key Pedagogical Segment (KPS 1), observable adjustments in a later KPS 2, and the next refinements identified through reflection.

Status: mentor-feedback → teaching-adjustment evidence is complete. The evidence supports improvement in teaching practice and learning-time conditions; it does not overclaim summative student achievement before post-assessment data are available.

Professional learning source and rationale

Senior School Professional Learning Meeting · 6 October 2026

I participated in a senior-school staff discussion focused on student needs, respectful communication, public-speaking confidence, financial literacy, gambling harm, mental-health/help-seeking, student feedback and collaborative program planning.

Assessment, Reporting & Graphing Professional Learning Meeting · 7 October 2026

I also participated in a teacher discussion about feedback, reporting and a practical graphing intervention: a short independent diagnostic task, visible self-assessment criteria, analysis of misconceptions and repetition of a similar task to check improvement.

Reflection

Why this professional learning matters for student learning

Implication for teaching

The meeting reinforced that effective teaching is not limited to presenting subject content. Students' confidence, respectful participation, willingness to ask for help and ability to communicate their thinking can influence how successfully they engage with learning.

For my Mathematics teaching, this means I need to deliberately create opportunities for students to explain reasoning, ask for clarification, respond respectfully to peers and participate without fear of embarrassment.

Connection to my Statistics sequence

The Year 8 Statistics sequence already uses explicit modelling, I DO / WE DO / YOU DO structures, questioning, wait time and independent practice. The 7 October professional learning is particularly relevant to 8C because students must construct and interpret graphs accurately.

A concrete planned response is to use a brief independent graphing task, make the success criteria visible, have students self-assess against those criteria and then discuss common misconceptions before further practice. If I implement this, I can compare later work to determine whether graph construction and interpretation improve.

6.4 evidence chain

Mentor feedback → adjustment → observable change

1 · KPS 1 · 00:00–09:44

Early-practice evidence ✓

The first unedited segment showed strong visual presentation and appropriate mathematics/statistics vocabulary. Mentor feedback identified the need for larger text, earlier intervention when students were talking, shorter teacher-led explanations and more protected independent work time.

2 · Adjustment identified from feedback

Actioned ✓

The next-stage focus was to reduce continuous teacher talk, establish clearer behaviour expectations, release students sooner to independent practice, circulate strategically and use subject-specific language consistently.

3 · KPS 2 · 02:35–12:15

Observable improvement ✓

The later segment showed more confident circulation and monitoring, clearer listening expectations, quicker redirection, more independent student work and stronger use of mathematics vocabulary. Examples include clearer expectations at 03:26–03:34, prompt redirection at 07:07–07:20 and 09:24–09:34, and circulation/support at 11:34–12:15.

4 · Continuing refinement

Specific next step ✓

The evidence also identified a remaining communication issue: tally instructions were missed around 11:53–12:08, resulting in student confusion and questions. The next refinement is concise instruction, explicit checking that directions are understood, consistent behaviour expectations and protected independent practice.

APST 6.4 · Professional learning and improved student learning

This evidence demonstrates my understanding that professional learning is valuable when it changes practice. KPS 1 and the mentor's written feedback identified specific needs in classroom management, pacing and independent learning time. In KPS 2, the later video and mentor feedback show that I responded through more purposeful circulation, earlier redirection, clearer expectations and greater independent student work. The remaining tally-instruction issue also shows that professional learning is iterative rather than complete after one improvement cycle.

Evidence boundary: this record supports a demonstrated improvement in teaching practice and the conditions for student learning. Claims about overall student achievement will be made only when later assessment data justify them.
