Senior School Professional Learning & Staff Collaboration Meeting

De-identified record of professional learning gained through participation in a senior-school staff discussion at Wallan Secondary College.

Privacy: the original transcription is retained privately. No staff names, student names or identifying case details are published here.

Meeting context

Collaborative planning around senior-school learning, wellbeing and transition.

Operational updates

Staff discussed Year 12 end-of-year arrangements, including celebration activities, an assembly, private study and English SAC preparation. Year 11 arrangements included private study, exam preparation, supervision and changes to learning spaces during the examination period.

Skills for Life planning

The meeting also focused on future Skills for Life content and how learning could respond to student needs identified through staff discussion and student feedback.

Professional learning

Key themes from the discussion

Respectful communication & bystander skills

Staff discussed concerns about racism, inappropriate language and the difficulty some students experience when challenging peers. Proposed learning included practical communication strategies, respectful disagreement and bystander responses.

Public-speaking confidence

Staff identified public speaking and confidence in communicating with others as an area worth strengthening through practical, real-world learning experiences.

Financial literacy & gambling harm

Proposed topics included banking, credit, debt, budgeting and the risks associated with gambling. Staff considered the value of external presenters and lived-experience perspectives where appropriate.

Mental health & help-seeking

The discussion considered focused mental-health education, help-seeking behaviours and awareness of community services. Existing Year 11 help-seeking/community-service content was viewed as valuable to retain and develop.

Program evaluation

Staff reflected on mixed feedback from a previous masculinity-focused program and discussed the importance of reviewing student response before deciding whether and how similar content should continue.

Collaborative program design

Staff were invited to contribute ideas for future programming and budget planning, demonstrating collaborative curriculum and wellbeing planning across the senior-school team.

Reflection

What I learned from the meeting

Professional learning

The meeting broadened my understanding of how secondary teachers collaborate beyond subject content. Senior-school planning brings together curriculum, wellbeing, transition, student voice, behaviour expectations, practical life skills and access to external expertise.

I also saw the importance of responding to actual student needs rather than treating wellbeing programs as fixed content. Staff discussion drew on observed student behaviour, feedback and previous program outcomes when considering future learning priorities.

Implications for my practice

For my own teaching, this reinforces the value of explicit teaching of communication, respectful participation and help-seeking alongside academic learning. It also highlights the importance of consulting colleagues and relevant specialists when student needs extend beyond my subject expertise.

A professional-learning need I can continue to develop is how to integrate student wellbeing, respectful communication and real-world capability-building into classroom practice while maintaining clear curriculum purpose.
